Nepal Flash Floods Kill Over 1,100 After Himalayan Glacier Collapse

Nepal's deadly flash floods after a Himalayan glacier collapse have killed more than 1,100 people, with thousands missing. Rescue teams search tunnels and rubble as India sends teams, equipment and medicines.

A massive bedrock collapse beneath a glacier near Langtang Lirung on August 26 unleashed ice, rock and mud into rivers, triggering flash floods that have killed more than 1,100 people, while thousands remain missing in districts including Rasuwa and Nuwakot.

Seismic data recorded a magnitude 5.2 signal from the collapse itself, rather than from an earthquake. The event sent huge volumes of ice, rock and mud into river systems, causing widespread destruction and leaving debris across affected areas.

Days after the disaster, Nepal's rescue teams continue searching through debris-filled tunnels and rubble for survivors. The scale of the destruction has made rescue operations increasingly difficult as teams work through the affected areas in search of those still missing.

India has sent rescue teams, equipment and medicines to support Nepal's response to the disaster. The assistance comes as emergency teams continue efforts to locate survivors and respond to the devastation caused by the flash floods.
