Nepal Flash Floods Kill Over 1,100 After Himalayan Glacier Collapse

Seismic data recorded a magnitude 5.2 signal from the collapse itself, rather than from an earthquake. The event sent huge volumes of ice, rock and mud into river systems, causing widespread destruction and leaving debris across affected areas.

Days after the disaster, Nepal's rescue teams continue searching through debris-filled tunnels and rubble for survivors. The scale of the destruction has made rescue operations increasingly difficult as teams work through the affected areas in search of those still missing.

The fifth Indian aircraft has departed for Nepal.

It is carrying an 11-member rescue team with specialised equipment, and 5.5 tonnes of essential medicines.

India has sent rescue teams, equipment and medicines to support Nepal's response to the disaster. The assistance comes as emergency teams continue efforts to locate survivors and respond to the devastation caused by the flash floods.

The tragedy has highlighted the urgent need for better early warning systems and more resilient infrastructure in areas vulnerable to disasters linked to Himalayan glaciers and sudden collapses.
